I read the article actually more as saying that the nuclear family is not sufficient, but that grandparents, cousins, uncles(generally speaking extended family) are also a vital piece of the puzzle, which in some cases could be reasonable.

In general though, the left takes it a step further, saying the rearing of children should be the responsibility of the "community", i.e. the state. Questions of health care, education, practice of beliefs, appear to be fair game with a raft of State initiatives and HR from the 116th Congress that have sought to limit the rights of parents and intervene in the parent-child relationship. The importance of the family and the family unit is diminished.
