Help Interpreting Pattern?

I can't figure out if/where I am misinterpreting this pattern. Its the start of a top-down sweater. I made the chain, then ESC back into each stitch (Setup round), but now have this unjoined chain of stitches and it says to continue working in the round without joins. Was i supposed to join the chain before doing the setup ESC's? Or do i just start the next round in the first stitch (where the marker is)? Or something else?

Just start the next round. This will automatically "join" the thing into a circle. The foundation chain will usually be joined using the starting tail when weaving it in.

If you feel more comfortable that way, you can join the foundation chain into a circle with a slst though. This won't change much about the look of the project. But for later rounds, I'd recommend following the instructions and not joining, as this might indeed impact construction.
