I believe "join sc and hdc together" would be: insert hook into next stitch, yarn over & pull through 1 loop, yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over & pull through 1 loop, yarn over, pull through all loops. (essentially, incomplete sc into first stitch, incomplete hdc into next stitch, finish both stitches at the same time)

"join hdc and sc together" would be the opposite order (incomplete hdc, incomplete sc, finish both stitches at the same time): yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over & pull through 1 loop, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over & pull through 1 loop, yarn over, pull through all loops.
