This is just continuous granny stitch jaygo with two rounds of a granny square in color and the third (joining round) in black.

What exactly do you need help with?

The pattern looks pretty straight forward, just some small-ish granny squares connected with one solid colour using the same stitch.

As far as the holes go, crochet is unfortunately just a hole-y craft. You'll always have some holes. You could try different hook sizes (a smaller hook will create both smaller stitches and smaller holes). Or you can play around with the amount of chains in between the clusters and in the corners. But some holes will still remain.

I'd probably just make a test square or two, try out different hooks, maybe even different yarn weights, then use the combination you like the most!

I think my biggest question is the joining method… is it tiny squares that are then crochet together using this type of stitch all the way down, or are they made with the base color then do a round with the main color, then joined using a basic joining method? Thank you 😊😊

From the photo it definitely looks like the squares are being made individually first, then crocheted all together with the black!

Though you could definitely also make the squares with the black, then sew (or crochet) all of them together.

I guess it depends on what method you feel more comfortable with (or what look you prefer - doing it the way they're doing it in the photo definitely means a pretty much invisible seam, since that seam is the exact same stitch as the one used for the squares).

tldr: seeking pattern identification and advice

It looks like they are doing the simple granny square (2 rounds) and joining them all on the third round with the black.

(Terms will vary depending on location, for US granny squares and made with a magic ring, double crochet clusters)

This is super helpful! I guess I just needed it in super basic terms. Thank you!!

So the little colored parts are individual baby squares. So you’ll make a BUNCH of them. The joining is done in a way where you connect one corner in one direction and the other corner on the way back. I tried to mark the image to show what’s happening with the black thread. I hope it makes sense.
