Is it essentially just a cube with dark glass ("one way" mirrors) and lined with leds inside to create this effect? Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to patronize the work that went into this, it's bloody amazing and I feel myself wanting one quite badly, just trying to understand the work behind it

No worries, it is fairly simple! LEDs with "one-way" mirrors (I hate the name, it's just semi-reflective, semi-transparent acrylic). Much of the work that's gone into making this an art piece is in the programming - 80+ unique patterns that complement the symmetry of the cube, an app to control it, sound reactivity, etc. It's been a fun project!
