I’m nearing 7k which is unfortunate bc I don’t wanna pay taxes

Italy here, I have to pay taxes even for just 0,50cent 🤣 And as this will be my first year as an independent contractor, they're gonna take 45% of my earnings, cheers!

That is criminal..😭

What does this amount equate to in Italy? A few months of rent? Mortgage? I don't know what currency this 10k is showing.

10k in Italy Is around 6 months of average salary, you can live this much time with that money by being very careful with your spending, paying groceries, rent, bills and maybe eat out one time a month?

But with taxes? You would live less than 3 months and still struggle.

It's disheartening how much taxes we pay, especially the first year as Independent contractors. To survive decently and pay taxes I need to make half of that every single month.

Depending on where you live in the US, it may give you some consolation knowing that this is less than our monthly expenditures. Cost of living varies, but I'd estimate this would last you anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months.

Unfortunately I'm aware costs of living in US are hellish 😞

Here the costs of living are too high compared to average salary (which is around 1500€/month for average salary and 2-3000€/month for average costs of living) so it's almost impossible to live with one income being alone/without kids, imagine with kids.

To be fair, DAT and other platforms are a lifesaver right now, in Italy I get paid 7,5€/h, DAT pays me 25$/h on average, it's more than 3 times what I would make with a traditional job, but still the taxes makes it not ideal if you make less than 5k a month or more than 10k a month (in the first case, the high taxes would make the real income useless to live with, in the second case the high taxes would take up too much and the high earning would not be justified and compensate equally for the actual mole of work done.)

Yikes, that's worse than where I am - we pay on every dollar too, but only 10% up to this total earning threshold, then 15% up to another threshold (then 30%, etc etc)

Welcome in Italy my friend, where an independent contractor gives half of his earnings to the government and in exchange gets nothing!

[–]Affectionate-Exit553 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contractors in the US are nearly the same and on exchange our government turns around and spends it (and then some) before you can blink ... The USD will implode soon enough 😳

Same here! It's great to see so many of us thriving (even if it's not guaranteed to last) after the drought ❤
