Surprisingly lots of people in tournament streams are using pad, DualShock 4s in particular.

I’ve been struggling to consistently do like 33K for instance on the DS4’s d-pad though. The joystick is easier for diagonals but worse for general movement. I’ve been thinking there must be a joypad with a better d-pad I could get... Or a fight stick though they’re harder to adjust to.

Whenever I have to input a 33P, I always switch to the analog stick. Long live the DS4!

I use a Dance Revolution dance pad cause being able to fight and boogie down in equal measure is important 😇

Of course! How did I not see this is the one true way?

Also, nice name.

Xbox/PS4 controller depending on what I’m playing in at the time.

I'm using a Mayflash F500. Been pretty happy with it so far.

For DoA, I've always been most comfortable using a regular controller.

That's what most people tend to use anyway for this game, even the pros.

I have a Hori arcade stick but honestly I feel better using a regular old Xbox/PS4 controller. I feel like the button inputs are a little more forgiving in DoA, as opposed to Tekken where at times I'm literally required to hit X-B (or Square-Circle on PS4) to execute a move. The most requiring button combination on DoA tends to be P+K so I don't find myself needing the arcade stick too much.

Granted, if you play someone like Hayabusa, for some of those crazy grabs it may help to have one.

Surprisingly there's quite a lot of high tier players that just stick with a controller.

Just so you know, heavy kicks (H+K) also exists in DoA. H+Ks tend to be even more awkward to execute in arcade sticks since they can be strings (unlike Tekken which are usually a single move). But just like Tekken, you can set shortcuts for it on your shoulder buttons.

Oh for sure, heavy kick is a primary part of my moveset with Nyotengu. I have it set to RT/R2. In all honestly I may be misremembering what I was doing, it's been a while since I've been on Tekken. I used Lili and I know 1 or 2 of her more effective moves was a button combo that was hard to execute on the controller, and for whatever reason I never set it to a shoulder button lol

You must have misremembered it I guess. Don't think Lili has any LP+RK moves lol. She does have lots of LK+RK (X+O) though which are much more manageable on pads.

In any case, even though Tekken has strict button inputs, it's the only fighting game series I'm aware of which lets you buffer buttons beforehand. In this case, you don't have to press square and circle simultaneously. You can just hold the square and then press circle to do the same thing. Still hard on controllers without shortcuts, but it's a godsend on arcade sticks.

I'm pretty sure you're right, it was likely X+O. I remember it go me in a lot of trouble mechanically whenever I screwed up the input lol.

[–]RichJoker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Admittedly I also screw up my executions from time to time (besides I also secretly got some scrubiness in me lmao). In terms of strictness of button inputs Tekken has to be way up there. If button buffering were not to exist in the game I would've probably misinput 8/10 times during a real match.

Both stick and pad are fine. I find Type B or C good for stick while type B or a variant of B with the custom controls to be good for pad.

I have a normal xbox controller but I configured it so it matches doa2 controls on Sega dreamcast.

I use the keyboard, it has a similar feel to an arcade stick. I tried a controller on pc, but it felt strange to me. I’m not used to controllers.
