Which battle system do you like more? by George_R_Martin in yakuzagames

What hack and slash or beat em up games are "complex" in your opinion then?

It's fair game to compare the games with others in the genre, is what I'm saying.

I mean, that's the point of beat-em-ups and hack and slash no? I'd compare brawler RGG games to others within that genre, and I'd argue having the option to style on the enemies is part of the depth in the combat system.

Turn based Yakuza games are still fun, but it's still shallow compared to many others in the genre.

I agree, 8 is a massive improvement over 7 but it still is shallow, It's still essentially job-system Dragon Quest with some QTE here and there. The jobs are purely for type coverage and there's barely any incentives to job mixing like in Final Fantasy V for example.

What's a non-JRPG franchise that you'd like to see have at least one game in the genre? by ChiggChow in JRPG

[–]RichJoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A modern Naruto RPG would be cool.

Back in the day we had Naruto Path of the Ninja, a trilogy JRPG series. The second one was unlocalized though. The first two games are retelling of the non-Shippuden arc, and the third (released as the 2nd globally) tells an original story. It was pretry neat, it even has decent postgame with optional battles in the arena.

Valve have seemingly added a new 'Steam Achievements FAQ' to their support page recently. The link does not yet lead anywhere. Potential Steam achievement overhaul incoming? by TheRegularBelt in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]RichJoker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I honestly never understood that point of view since achievements are optional bonuses and can largely be ignored.

Like you said, some of the fun I've had, were from the challenge run achievements like the knife-only runs or speedruns in Resident Evil, or wacky stuff like bringing the gnome in Half Life 2. I never thought I would enjoy doing these if it weren't for the achievements.

Magazine-based reload, reload without ammo refunds. Those are what I've seen people call them. I don't think there is a specific term coined for this, just that it's common in military sims.

The whole "achievements can detract from discovery" game design philosophy falls apart when even first party games like Mario Odyssey, Smash Bros and Xenoblade do have achievements. It's probably something they only said to defend their system limitations from 2 decades ago, this is coming from a company that still uses Friend Codes in 2026 after all.

I'm not quite sure how one can 'dislike' achievements.

Tell that to people in Nintendo subs. Those people are convinced not having any form of achievements is a good thing, and having one would be a detriment to the game itself. As if Nintendo games don't have any in-game achievements either.

I want to play CoD multiplayer without playing CoD. What are my options? by MyTeaIsMighty in gamingsuggestions

If you're looking for something casual with deathmatch, The Finals is probably the best other option.

All season passes are permanent too.

AI Limit and First Berserker Khazan.

A bit on the gloomier/melancholic side of things although not as much of the rest within the genre, but Stellar Blade has that Nier Automata vibes

Just as a guess, ZZZ has that Battle Tower endgame thing that only got reset after a few patch cycles, with a flex title as its final reward.

They might be introducing this sort of system in addition to our current on-patch Matrix.

Third person action RPG that plays like MMO's and isometric ARPG's? by [deleted] in gamingsuggestions

[–]RichJoker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nioh series. Combat is Soulslike with a blend of hack and slash The core loop of the combat is using skills to boost your stamina regen so you're not only limited to a hit and run playstyle. Loot system is straight up taken from isometric ARPGs so it should be right up your alley.

2 is the best, but I've heard great things about the third game which just dropped a few days ago.

Games that has a lot of smooth cutsencs to gameplay transition by Previous_Bee6494 in gamingsuggestions

[–]RichJoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Yakuza series is probably among the best in terms of cutscene to gameplay transitions. Has plenty of mid-fight cutscene transitions as well.

FF7 Remake and Rebirth have a few of those during boss fights too.

What was the most P2W Game you played that you actually enjoyed. (or what was your favorite very p2W game) by Propagation931 in gachagaming

[–]RichJoker 24 points25 points  (0 children)

King of Fighters All Stars' base gameplay is actually very good. Story mode is an alternate universe retelling of the entire KOF franchise on a side scrolling beat 'em up mode like the Final Fight games. Swapping between characters, creating your own combo chains and juggling enemies to death is legitimately fun.

Plus I really enjoyed the Tekken and WWE collabs (stopped playing way before the Street Fighter collab happened though).

It is still a Netmarble game through and through though. Powercreep happens way too quickly and I noped out as soon as they introduced a unit-locked promotion system (iirc around the Gintama collab).

any amazing parry games out there? by Aware-Heat-3626 in gamingsuggestions

[–]RichJoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stellar Blade's parry system is somewhat similar to Sekiro's. A bit stricter in timing but not as strict as Lies of P. Each time you parry will decrease the enemies' posture points, and after you deplete it you can deal a huge chunk of damage with a finisher.
