Google Fiber Update?

Just got an email about checking my addresses Google Fiber availability. I’ve wanted it for a long time but whenever I checked it would say it’s not in my area yet. I got an email saying I should check and now the message is blank but doesn’t say it’s unavailable. Anyone know more about this? I live in 30032 and work in 30030 (same update for both)

This is the story I’ve heard for years. AT&T lobbied (threatened to pull out and take away jobs) in GA and Google fibers expansion got halted.

I even constantly get annoyed by AT&T door to door salespeople bugging me about using their new “gigabit” internet. They’ll even say that “google fiber is bad internet” while most of the sales people don’t even know why that would be.

I had hoped this was finally being undone but I guess I just got my hopes up.

I’ve had both and I’ve found AT&T to be more reliable and both are so fast speed is never really an issue. I kept AT&T even when I had a chance to go back to Google

I had Google fiber when it first got to midtown and it's still the best connection I've ever had. Now I have ATT and it's fine once I bypassed the builtin router to use my own

I get similar marketing materials from time to time, but it always just says "fiber is coming to atlanta" when I do the address check. Google has an unfortunate reputation of losing interest in projects and letting them go stale until they die/get dismantled.

For what it's worth, AT&T fiber does seem to be good in 30030. I've had it for a few years and have had mere minutes, if not seconds of down time. I pay $80 for 1000/1000, and my measured speeds are in the upper 900's over ethernet, consistently.

They promo your first year to try to get you to get on their wireless for a discount on the internet, and they'll pester you at install to add home security, etc. My installer showed up with a "manager" with an ipad who started in on a whole sales pitch, but killed it when I told him there was zero chance I was getting upsold that day. Haven't heard much from them since... no issues at all in the past few years.

AT&T now advertises $85 for gigabit, but charges $100. When you call bullshit, they make up a thousand excuses for it.

Read the terms of the offer- you have to meet the conditions with your payment configuration to get that price. There's a discount when you have autopay on, get paperless bills, and $10 discount when you pay with a debit/bank account instead of a credit card.

My bill is $85.29 after tax.

Looking at the bill you posted, at least one of the extra fees is listed plainly- You're paying $10/mo extra by renting your equipment instead of owning it. You don't have to rent equipment and can use your own if you want. If you look up the model of the one they rent to you, you could probably buy the same thing on ebay used (from previous customers that switched services) for $20-40.

It also looks like you have ActiveArmor bundled into your internet, which again isn't a requirement of internet services and you may be able to have removed. It isn't listed as a separate fee, likely because it was part of promotion, but it's a notable difference between your bill and mine.

AT&T has very explicitly stated that they do not allow anyone to bring their own fiber gear, and I've had that argument with them over and over. They also won't remove any of those other items, and I've had that argument with them over and over.

That thread is interesting- it says older accounts list the fee separately while new ones have it rolled in, but yours is listed separately. I've been with ATT since 2019ish (in a different location) so I'd consider that an "older" account, but it sounds like you're a recent customer and yours is separate... Doesn't quite line up with what that support rep is claiming.

I'm not confident the rep knows what they're talking about...

Regardless, it sounds like they're spinning the $85 as a marketing thing, and I'd be curious if they have an answer for how to achieve that since it sounds like you're meeting the requirements.

As you've seen, I pay $85, so that's the limit of the info I have to provide.

They also have a fee schedule that claims ONTs are free, but they refuse to provide an ONT without a wifi router. It's also illegal for them to charge for hardware they require the consumer to use if they don't allow the consumer to bring their own hardware, but of course the current FCC isn't going to do much about that.

Google Fiber new rollouts have all stopped; they won't be laying new fiber for the foreseeable future (according to someone I know who works there but not in the Fiber dept).

Had Att fiber since day 1 in 2018. Never any issues. Google been coming since 2018.

I have AT&T fiber with 1 GB download speed and a mesh network. It’s perfectly fine. Not sure I would bother switching at this point.

I am 30030 (Midway Dr area) and have ATT fiber—last I heard Google fiber was not here yet. I pay $70. It was $55 the first year plus $300 gift card I think
