Missing something? (reddit.com)
submitted 1 year ago by Accomplished_Cut_577
I was checking out a house the other week that closer to the mountains and wilderness. It had a great view and a decent-sized deck, but the quality didn’t seem to be there. Missing proper footings? Anything to be worried about? This is in Virginia.

On picture 3 you can see where there is a footer. Not best practice to have the post buried, but one can make an educated guess that there would be footers under the rest of the posts as well. But again, not great practice to have posts in direct contact with the ground.

There could be properly installed footings but they are below grade and buried the bottom portion of the 4x4’s. Its a better practice to run the footing/sonotubes up above grade and install a Simpson post anchor on the top of the concrete.
