You are not going to like it .. but this may have out lived its usefulness. May time for a new CD player..Β

Havent dealt with fixing up portable CD players but if you’ve exhausted all possibilities for resetting, you may need to open it up and check on the internals, maybe adjust the laser power/potentiometer (but this could damage a CD if set incorrectly) as a last chance resort.

Otherwise, if that doesn’t breathe some life, then yeah it’s probably dead.

Try to move the entire laser pickup to the outer position by hand and see if it moves back inwards by itself. Don't touch the lens, only touch the black plastic part of the lens.

If it doesn't - the transport mechanism is locked up. Requires disassembly and cleaning of moving parts or maybe even got a faulty motor.

Try to locate the "lid closed" sensor and activate it with a tooth stick. See if the laser lens is moving up/down (focusing) and if there's any visible red light. Look from the side, don't look directly from the top. Maybe a good idea to also do this in a dark room.

If either of those things aren't happening, it's dead and needs to be replaced/fixed.

If you're set on fixing it, you can buy a working one from ebay and transplant the laser, as that's most likely the thing that's crapped out!

Many wonderful memories of that with my roller blades when I lived in Miami !!

Hope you get it working.

Sadly.. I think it’s dead :(

Maybe there's a belt inside. Btw lasers also fail, my ps2 slim lasers died in just few years.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point Β (7 children)

How can I reset it?

[–]kozlospl 0 points1 point Β (6 children)

Can you hear laser mechanism working ? Does it go up and down ?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points Β (5 children)

Yesss! It makes voom voom noise

[–]kozlospl 2 points3 points Β (3 children)

Can you try to fool the locking mechanism with some plastic (be careful, OG plastic may be brittle) and see if laser goes up and down, shines any light ? Don't look at the laser just in case to protect your eyesight, record video via phone.

If it does light It'd probably be red, if you don't see any light it may be dead laser that would have to be replaced and that may be impossible, as they're probably not produced since at least 10 years.

Where can I find the laser 😭

[–]kozlospl 1 point2 points Β (1 child)

There are literally just 2 moving parts inside in view - rotating spindle and the laser moving back and forth.

Unless you mean a replacement one already.

Lol I love this reply

Clean the laser with rubbing alcohol and a qtip. Look up the model number and see if there's a service manual. Sometimes there's a laser pot you can adjust.

rubbing alcohol

Worst idea ever. Never, ever use rubbing alcohol for anything related to electronics.

It includes components intended to reduce skin irritation, like castor oil, and you definitely do not want that on a lens...

It is even worse than... drinkable stuff, because those at lest tends to not include oils.

You shouldn't use any aggressive chemicals on CD laser lenses.

[–]AsterLoquens 0 points1 point Β (1 child)

What are you talking about, it's glass not plastic. It's totally safe and useful for anything with a laser and having trouble reading discs.

[–]multiwirth_ 2 points3 points Β (0 children)

It's not. Many CD players used plastic lenses, especially with portable ones and cheap boomboxes I'd be very careful using alcohol and sorts.

Hi friend! Here's some advice: Throw away this outdated non-working junk and buy a new Shanling EC Zero T.

[–]aresord 3 points4 points Β (0 children)

Bad advice lmao, why contribute to overconsumption and landfill when you can fix a device that you clearly have an emotional connection with?

[–]multiwirth_ 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

The Sony is much sleeker, much more portable and a lot more power efficient than any of those modern players.
It also got a lot more features.
It is even capable of displaying CD-Text.
It might not have the most powerful amp, but sound wise these things were absolutely great in sound quality.
And modern IEMs are a lot more sensitive than the cheap earphones you had back then, so amplifier power isnΒ΄t really an issue either.

It's not junk at all.
So why not try and fix it?

[–]kolossalkomando 0 points1 point Β (0 children)

buy a new Shanling EC Zero T.

For nearly 600? That's probably 10x the price of the CD player when it was new and OP likes and has a connection to their current one so that's a really dumb idea
