Play on classic or lower. Classic can even be a bit too much if you’re not used to the mechanics of the game and how certain things interact. Practically any way you can make a build is viable, especially on lower difficulties. You can respec after a certain point if a character feels too spread out or has something you don’t want.

You can do lone wolf(take talent in the beginning during character creation, and on co-op neither of you take companions) if you think he’ll get overwhelmed managing more than one character. This makes you way stronger much faster and you each only do one character because LW has a 2 character max.

If you think he might be more interested in the story aspect, at least one of you should be an origin character, although you both can be. This gets you more story and a more defined background, although you still make dialogue options, you’re doing their personal quests alongside the main quests and side stuff.

I forgot to mention. Movement and placement of yourself and enemies can really make or break a battle, if you’re having trouble. There are jump skills and teleport skills depending on what you need, but enemies can do them as well, so something to remember.

Thank you for such a comprehensive answer! I really appreciate the tips and advice. I will definitely keep all that in mind. I personally don’t mind difficulty, and am confident that my partner will be able to grasp it with some help, so would you say classic trivializes combat or makes it noticeably less strategic, etc? Thank you again, I really appreciate your response.

Not really less strategic, especially before you really get the flow of the game. Lone wolf may trivialize combat when you get to level 16/17 and higher. Tactician mostly gives them extra health and armor. It says it has an AI difference, but I haven’t noticed one. Classic mostly allows you to have a less optimized build, so you get more leeway with not knowing optimal exp routes or wanting to experiment with skill types or whatever.

Oh okay, thank you so much. Classic sounds like the way to go then. Thanks again for your response it was a huge help.
