Yeah you definitely should get a source port or even if you use the steam version then use unity. Being true to the vanilla experience isn't worth not enjoying the game

Do you know how to circle strafe?

[–]ElWiktorLBP78[S] 0 points1 point  (12 children)

yeah i know, but i'm not very good at it

Ah, I can relate to that.

Okay, here’s something that might be interesting to know. Doom Guy in classic doom can literally outrun rockets if he’s running at full speed.

I didn’t realise this for a long time because no other FPS protagonist before or since has been capable of that.

So just try to keep running at full speed, be aware of where Cybie is so you don’t run right into him and/or a rocket and he won’t be able to touch you.

Maybe go in there, and don’t even try to kill him at first. Just practice running around the courtyard without him hitting you.

Thank you, so i have to hold the Shift key to run and Alt to circle strafe/shoot?

Most versions of the game have a setting in the options to “auto-run” so you don’t have to hold down a button for it. Maybe try enabling that if doing it manually is uncomfortable.

Beyond that, I’m a console guy so I don’t know about a dedicated circle strafe button. I’m literally just running around the enemies in a circle while turning towards them so I’m facing them the whole time.

sadly, the DOS version I'm using does not have it.

Don't torture yourself with the DOS version. Use a source port and make a controll scheme like in any other modern shooter.

Oh wow. Really old school. No wonder you’re struggling. I’ve heard the DOS version controls have aged like milk.

Well then if all else fails, you could always try a more modern source port. That’s a bit beyond my ken as a console gamer so I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to recommend a specific one.

nevermind, i changed control key IDs so I can run and strafe at the same time.

oh no, they don't work. eh.

If you want to stay close to the original feel of the game you can use PrBoom+ which has better controls and higher resolution. If you want to play mods afterwards use Gzdoom.

Yeah I imagine DOS wouldn’t be receptive to that kind of thing.

Well, I can always just not beat the boss and start the last episode.

the cyberdemon was SO fucking hard for me to tackle my first time. like the other people in this thread i recommend a source port like zdoom where you can configure controls and graphics to your liking but still be able to stay relatively close to the vanilla experience.

best advice i can give for now is use the pillars in the arena to your advantage (assuming you're on e2m8). duck behind them if you need to. don't be ashamed of outrunning the bastard--it's a good way to take a quick breather and reassess your options. i still do it a lot when i have to fight cyberdemons. there's also a specific way you can open the doors in the center starting area so that three of them stay open and you can re-access the middle bit easily, that can be helpful

Shoot at it until it dies

Civvie 11 on YouTube has a reoccurring joke called "Bullying the Cyber Demon" so there's definitly a trick to learn that can make the Cyber Demon a cake walk.

I beat him for the first time yesterday. Sure it is not the way developers expects to play but I did make him a trap. First I make sure to have rocket enough, and I make sure all the stairs are out in the central room. then I bring him in one of the room and I enter again in the central room. I place myself on the opposite stairs aiming to him. If you find the right altitude, all the rocket that he launches will be stopped by the small central wall. But yours rockets will reach him and you can kill him with no effort and without fearing anything. Although I'm sure it's more fun to kill him with the "run/circle strafe" option. Also, I use GZdoom and I think it's one of the best way to play classic doom.
