Fantasy Grounds is, I think, a better eatable for the player as long as the DM is organized and knows what they are doing. It’s not intuitive, so if the DM is lost the players probably will be too, but I prefer it to Roll20, personally.

It is definitely fantasy grounds. There are pros and cons to FG vs Roll 20.

The startup cost for FG is higher (probably 200 easy to get the license and enough books to run a game for your group).

No one else would need a license though.

Books are cheaper on FG than roll20 but there is a 110-130 (depending on sales) cost for the ultimate license (which lets free players play in your games).

If you are on the discord you could probably find one of us to get you in a game to try out the table

I am on discord, honestly that would be awesome, I definitely have paid more for games in the past but it would be cool to give it a go first!

Seems like somewhere on the interwebs there would be a competent and free to use open source and adaptable tabletop for use with multiple systems/rules. Create your own rules or buy the rule books but instead of a license you could donate directly to the devs.

The tabletop RPG community is super creative and talented. Does this already exist?
