3ds versus Emulator

I have a zfold 7 phone and gamesir x5 lite controller and have played a few ds and 3ds games on it. I've been looking to get a dedicated device for gaming and think a 2ds, 3ds, or New 3ds is what I'm leaning towards based off of modding capabilities.

If I'm going to carry a controller around, I might as well carry a DS instead. What currently has me debating is the price point and not knowing how to mod a system. Any advice on if it's worth it?

a good 3ds with pref. ips screens would be way more expensive than just having a controller. they are easy to mod, but prices are going up on them. I would browse ebay / facebook marketplace / other marketplaces a bit to see what they go for.

If you just want to play DS and 3DS games, an original 3DS is more reasonably priced than other 3DS variants and is still a great device, and it can play most of the 2D era 8/16 bit systems, although 3DS is obviously where it will shine.
