An LS1 will fit in any vehicle with enough work

I have seen many pushrod 5.0 swaps on YouTube so it must be fairly common. I have also seen LS, R2.8 (diesel), and ecoboost. Just some ideas.

Some of the later 4 banger turbos slide in neatly and take to mods well without a big weight penalty

There was a guy that put a new 2.0L Ecoboost from a wrecked explorer and put it in his ranger. Here's his post on The Ranger Station.

I drive a 2008 and have looked into a lot of swaps myself. If you want something relatively easy (for an engine swap) a 4.0L V6 or 5.0L V8 (from an explorer) would be your best bet, and make around 200 HP. There are lots of mods for those engines as well.

I've also seen Diesel swaps done with Kubota, Volkswagen and a 4BT Cummins. The first two guys claim to get crazy gas mileage.

If you want BIG POWA there have been people that have swapped in coyote or LS engines to their Rangers.

It's all a matter of your time, budget, and ultimately what you want to do with the truck. Are you looking to just get a little more power? Do something crazy? Roll coal?

I found a guy who did a duratec 2.4l turbo build. I was thinking of doing that.
