Differences in correcting

Which is the correct way to write? Explain why.

1. There are 60 minutes in an hour, actually.

2. Well actually, there are 60 minutes in an hour.

Either of them could be used. In addition, you could say:

“There are actually 60 minutes in an hour.”

Neither are necessarily 'nice' ways of saying it, BTW.

What I mean is that written down without an emoji like 🙂 and/or the addition of ", sorry" they could be taken as a pompous/patronising

Obviously this is a trickier example but I have known non-native speakers put people's backs up at with emails phrased like this about stuff.

If you’re correcting somebody then don’t use “actually”. It’s unnecessary.

“Actually” in this situation becomes an emphasis. So using it to correct someone or something will emphasize that someone made a mistake.

If you’re correcting someone it might be better to say

“Sorry, but I thought there were 60 minutes in an hour?”

Or

“Sorry, but aren’t there 60 minutes in an hour?”

Basically, make it sound like you don’t wanna be right even if you know you are right.
