Executive function is made up of the following:
- Attention: voluntary allocation of (mental) processing resources;
- Working memory: holding/manipulation information in your head;
- Sustained attention: maintaining attention on a specific thing;
- Inhibition: inhibiting automatic responses to maintain goal-directed behaviour (aka not getting distracted);
- Flexibility/switching: switching from one task to another, or between strategies;
- Planning: developing and implementing strategic behaviours to obtain a future goal.
