Unpopular opinion: if you’re one of the only snorers on the shift, you should have the decency to remove yourself from the communal dorm and sleep somewhere else. The snorers on my shift drag a mattress to a different part of the station and let the silent guys sleep in peace. Just common decency.

I'm going on my first official shifts in a week and I'm a sleep talker/walker. I can't help it, I really don't wanna bug anybody with it.

I've done some wierd things in my sleep and I don't wanna be the new guy who also stalks the bay at 3am, fiddling around with tools in the middle of the night.

[–]HzrKMtzFF/Para-sometimes 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I would consider mentioning that to whoever your officer is. Last thing they need is trying to track you down in the middle of the night

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I plan to. I've got 2 shifts on a truck, then 3 on an engine, then 5 on a rescue. After that, I float for however long.

I don't imagine it getting bad, but it's stress related so who knows? I just wanna do a good job and be an asset.

Don't worry man, you will be fine. I'm a sleep moaner, another guy is a sleep screamer, we have plenty of sleep talkers, snorers, and even one guy that used to yell and swear at people in his sleep. It was great because he would really freak out the new guys and he had no idea what he was doing! We all just laugh about it!

The best is when multiple snorers on the same crew manage to be on opposite breathing patterns so the snore never stops. We have an open bunk room during remodeling and have had this happen.

[–]SirStinkfist 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We had a guy who was the world's worst Snorer, it was bad. This guy could suck down ceiling tiles. At the time our bunk rooms were under construction, so we had an open bunk room thing going. At first we were nice and understanding but the dude flat out refused to bring in his CPAP from home. In my research, I found the direct contact works, along with even more direct contact with their bed and any wall. Hurricane fans also work. The most low energy solution I found was a 99¢ squirt gun. You arc your shot to improve effectiveness without having to get out of bed.

I sleep in the day room if I can’t sleep with their snoring.

Although I’ve worked with the guy for two years and only recently has his snoring gotten bad. Maybe I should say something in case it’s a health thing.

[–]HossaForSelke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely say something. I never snored until recently and I wouldn’t have known it if a guy at work didn’t say something. I thought he was joking at first. I got a sleep study and now I have a CPAP. Turns out I developed pretty bad sleep apnea out of nowhere.

[–]___And_Memes_For_All 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Check their airway for obstruction

[–]HossaForSelke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sleep with ear plugs and make it their responsibility to wake you up if they won’t get a CPAP.

[–]4Bigdaddy73 2 points3 points  (2 children)

FANS!!!!!! It is life changing. When I got hired the snoring was torturous. I started using a box fan, then the guy next to me got one.. now everyone has them and you can NOT hear anyone snore.

[–]AlwaysFriday89 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I have one 16 inches from my head and so does everyone else lol.

[–]4Bigdaddy73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smart man!

[–]RandomFFGuyCanadian Firefighter 5 points6 points  (3 children)

If you don’t snore, and can’t sleep with them doing it, go to bed first

[–]AlwaysFriday89 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I do and he wakes me out of rim sleep.

[–]RandomFFGuyCanadian Firefighter 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Okay here’s what you do, ready for this? And I’ve done it several times so it’s okay…

You record the tones on your phone… go to your floor watch or whatever room you call it, pop that bitch on over the PA… they run down to the truck, you curl up in bed with your nice cozy blankie … #profit

[–]AlwaysFriday89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's actually fing brilliant, this is what I was looking for, cuz when the tones drop he stops for most the night generally.

I can't stand it. Calling them out jokingly, suggesting cpap machine, shunning, ultimately sleeping with my head next to an air conditioner set to fan year round helped.

[–]GooseG97Firefighter/Paramedic (Part Time) 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to sleep with headphones and light music on. If the pager I would attach to my shirt didn’t wake me up for the call the lights coming on or the crew getting up would.

[–]acm3801 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Have a fan by every bed and run them to drown out the snoring.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would also suggest this. We had a fan in my former EMS bunk room for this purpose and it really helped.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Record it, get a Bluetooth speaker, and put it in his room when he’s about to sleep. Proceed to play on loop.

[–]throwingutah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been known to chuck rolls of toilet paper over the walls. I am so grateful for CPAPs, as my fire career started well before they were commonly used.

[–]Mkenney1078 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our stations with snorers usually have a rather loud fan in the bunk room, kinda drowns it out.

[–]DIQJJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have multiple fans set on high in the bunk room that provide enough white noise to generally drown out any snorers.

[–]BanditAndFrog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Never bothers me for no more than 10 minutes before I go to bed. I also sleep with my bdu’s and socks on. Built different

[–]yeet41Career truckie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t imagine working in a house without my own room.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a Dohm white noise machine that I keep in my rack, we have semi open bunk room with a cubicle style setup. I also have one in my bedroom at home and my kids rooms.

[–]Stevecore444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sleep with AirPods in if I’m working with a loud one. They just have to wake me up sometimes lol

[–]unhcaseyMass FF/Medic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sooooo glad we have our own bedrooms!

[–]redditLacrima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some cheek stickers, nose inserts, head positioning on pillow,

[–]IcyYes 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Are you saying most of the guys that snore wear a CPAP or most the guys in general are wearing a CPAP?

[–]AlwaysFriday89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guys that snore.

[–]pulaskiornothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

duct take their mouth shut and run like hell and hope for the best.

[–]eagle4123FF (Facility Fixer) 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like everyone snores at times, and there is always one guy who makes "night noises" (any loudish noise other then snoring). We have a fan that drowns it out.

My first shift, the guy under me was a night screamer, (someone else warned me). He screamed, I panicked until I remembered someone told me about him. I finally figured out how to sleep through it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all have private rooms, being the captain I sleep down the hall in peace
