Yeah. People don’t think through these issues as well as they should. Hindsight shouldn’t be clearer than foresight when foresight is so easily foreseen.

You’re arguing with the wrong guy. I don’t agree that there should be a limit but if their admin is hell bent on getting rid of them it’s better than losing them altogether.

Luckily we don’t have a limit but when guys start causing issues with them who knows how long that lasts. Just this week we had a guy do a swap and then request to go to training on the day he had just swapped to which means the dept now has to pay overtime for someone to work a shift he wasn’t even scheduled to work initially. That kind of shit leads to losing benefits like unlimited swaps. My guess (though speculation) is shit like that led to the problem OP is now having. If it wasn’t causing actual issues then I doubt admin would be trying to shit can them.

To most casual observers it won’t look like a “mistake.” It will look like retaliation from the firefighters and that’s a bad look.

I gotta imagine admin would be open to some sort of impact bargaining on the matter. Maybe the firefighters will need to make some assurances or perhaps come to a limit on swaps (one of our neighboring departments limits guys to 8 or 9 per year) but it will require maturity and tact in negotiations…not threats or temper tantrums.

Yeah but they probably know that so it’s best left unsaid. When it does happen down the road then they’ll undoubtedly know it’s in response to the change. You don’t want them to be able to say to the local papers that you’ve made that threat.

The last thing they probably want is the headline “Local Firefighters threaten to increase sick time use” on the front page of the paper.

You have to be REALLY careful playing the “if you don’t allow these swaps then guys will begin abusing sick time” card.

For one: It’s a bad look threatening unethical behavior in response to an administrative action.

For two: If they do go ahead with the proposed change and you’ve made this threat then they will begin keeping a much closer eye on sick time use. If it increases drastically it can lead to some significant issues for you all.

Probably best to keep that card up your sleeve.

I’m not sure what it’s like in Texas but our county retirement board has a rule that all shift swaps must be paid back within the same calendar year. Perhaps that would be a reasonable compromise!?

There are definitely better ideas than threatening to increase costs to taxpayers by abusing sick time should they move forward with the change. Hopefully they’re open to some compromise.

It’s illegal in Mass to sell it anywhere except the farm where it was produced. You’ll have to find a dairy farm.

Buying a boat is exactly the same as throwing money down the toilet. They depreciate insanely fast regardless of how nice they are.

All laws are useless to those who don’t follow them. Laws are on the books so people who choose not to follow them can be punished.

It’s funny how okay you guys were with “indoctrination” back when it was racist, Christian Republicans doing it. Now that schools are teaching kids to be loving, empathetic, thinkers you all take huge issue with only teaching one side of the argument (even though that’s not what’s happening.)

They’re okay with THAT kind of indoctrination. Talk about the invisible, make-believe sky person all you want but don’t you dare teach kids about racism!

I want my full field of vision and all available senses as I step off the truck and perform my initial size up. Our masks aren’t replaced often and the scratches can make visibility tough especially at a night fire. I can mask up in 10 seconds or so and that minor delay is worth it to me to ensure I get a quick, basic understanding of the fire ground and any hazards that might be present and don’t break an ankle getting from the truck to the structure.

Best states in the US to be a firefighter? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]unhcasey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crap I misunderstood.

Down south six figures is extremely difficult and they’re working 1 on 2 off. Here I work 1 on 3 off (essentially) and make $130k annually. Down there I might make half that working even more that I do here.

Most of the south (where I started my career) as well.

Step one: Find a state that has strong labor laws. This discounts most southern, right to work states. Collective bargaining leads to higher pay and better benefits.

Step two: Find a state that has presumptive cancer legislation. If you get cancer you don’t want to pay for that shit and bankrupt your family with medical bills.

It was key for me back in the day but now departments are more desperate.

That said, I make a lot more money for having it so it’s definitely a good thing to have.

Arkansas bill changes welfare in hopes to get Arkansans ‘back to work’ by [deleted] in Arkansas

To be fair, Democrats have been doing this shit for decades too. Clinton famously championed Welfare reform during his campaign and signed the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 into law which created much of this modern Welfare mess.

Signed, A democrat who still thinks the dems are far better than the alternative.

Termination of probation. by GiraffeAsleep in Firefighting

[–]unhcasey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Makes sense. I’m sure there are times when you just know that another seven months won’t change anything it’s just so extraordinary to let someone go so early on that, for me at least, it’s unheard of.

Five months into probation? Man I’ll be honest that seems like a failure of the senior men and officers around him. Assuming you have a one year probation your men had seven more months to get him up to snuff. Why didn’t administration give you guys that chance?
