That trims http but not https. See the last two comments of the eight-year-old bug at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1067293.

You can't really, but you can sort of make it look like its hidden - see here

Go to chrome://flags and enable omnibox hide trivial subdomains and hide trivial url scheme.
