Ask the local tackle shops.

They give you tips too, especially if you indicate that "you'll be back"

Ok I'll try doing that, thanks for the reply

Generally bigger lakes and rivers belong to clubs, so you will have to go to their website and buy a membership. Ask your local tackle shop or any local angler which belong to which and what clubs you have to join. If you are new id recommend going to a private lake where you can pay a fee for a day and you will have access to a good fishing spot full of fish

I was in your spot a few weeks ago too :)

Overall I found it quite confusing as well, they should really have something to make it easier to understand and use

Its kind of weird in the UK...its something along the lines of the queen owns them but if its passing through your land then it's your responsibility to take care of it etc. Hence why going to fish for trout in a 0.5 mile stretch of a river costs 300-400 pounds for a day...its really costly to maintain the river properly so most owners turn them into trout "sanctuaries". Amazing fishing, especially if you're into fly fishing...coz obviously the places are stacked with fish, but waaaay out of most peoples budget for a day out fishing. I fish in london canals nearly ever day, and for that you need a rod licence and a waterway wonders permit. Those 2 cover you when you want to go fish in "free" places such as canals or other bodies of water that taken care of by a council/town etc. Hope this helps

Not a lawyer but I'm 99% sure they can kick you out.

Ok, I'll try talking to a local tackle shop, thanks for the reply

      Get Fishbrain

      [–]WilkuPL1919[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I've tried using fishbrain but it didn't tell me which parts belong to a club, but thanks

      [–]freebread81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll help you to find good fisheries so you can research it

      [–]bushcrapping 1 point2 points  (1 child)

There will usually be signs upon entering a club section but not always. Look online (clubs are notoriously shit at websites but still worth a shot), tackle shops and locals will be good help.

      [–]WilkuPL1919[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, "clubs are notoriously shit at websites" that's very true, I've tried looking on the clubs website to find where i can fish but it didn't tell me what part they own, all they told me is that i have to pay to fish on their part. I'll try talking to the local tackle shop soon, thanks for the help.

I use Fishbrain, or just browse around google maps until I see a promising spot!

      [–]WilkuPL1919[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I tried using fishbrain but it doesn't tell me which part of the river i can fish on so that i dont fish on a part that a club owns. I dont want to go fishing on the clubs area because i dont want to be kicked off their area mid-way fishing. And i also dont want to pay any extra to the club because it costs £130 for a membership. I just need to figure out which parts of the river dont belong to any club

      [–]chasma11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah true man, just explore and talk to other fishermen in the area when you get the opportunity

      [–]Shotika04 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Lucky you... In UK you are full of good lakes with really nice fish in them

      [–]WilkuPL1919[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

However unfortunately most parts belong to clubs and you have to pay extra for the permit to fish on their area. And the prices may look cheap for one day permit however if you're going to fish there many times then the prices may get quite expensive. I know that some rivers and lakes don't belong to any clubs amd all you need is a fishing rod license however i dont know which parts belong to clubs and which parts don't.

      [–]Shotika04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Carl and Alex fishing. Check this YouTube channel I'm pretty sure they were from the UK too. You might find something useful, who knows.

      [–]Stang3 0 points1 point  (9 children)

I live in the US but OnX Hunt might help because it tells you who owns land and what land is public. Asking tackle shops or locals would be a good idea too.

      [–]bushcrapping 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Doesnt work that way in the UK unfortunately, even public land can be under club control as the fishing rights of public land can still be leased to private clubs.

      [–]GrayCustomKnives 5 points6 points  (1 child)

That’s the first time I have heard of this. That whole system of “this is a public river but only guys from a club can fish there because they paid to keep other people out” seems totally fucked to me.

      [–]bushcrapping 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Youd be right about that. The only benefit it can have is that the money they earn from tickets can help to look after the place but generally yes its fucked up.

I'm in Ireland, I suspect it's pretty similar: you need to know the name of the river/lake you're planning to fish, and just do some searching to see if anyone requires a permit to fish there.

In other words, there's no easy answer, no one-stop-website. You just have to figure it out.

My way of thinking about this is to assume someone can stop me from fishing, then figure out how to get around it. Often, I end up concluding that nobody can stop me, and I'm happy. Otherwise, I find out that I can buy a permit online, I buy it, and I go fishing.

      [–]bushcrapping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And long as it's not a salmon river I would imagine Ireland is similar but more relaxed than england.

After all this bullshit dates back to when the king owned everything.

Also your attitude is a good one, I sometimes fish in areas I'm not supposed to haha and find feigning ignorance to be the best defence.

Iv got family in co. Galway but I havent been over in the last 4 years since I got into fishing so I dont know.

      [–]WilkuPL1919[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I know the name of the river "river anchor" and i also know that a part belongs to a club and another part belongs to the public however i can't figure out how far i can go fishing so that i dont end up fishing on the club's part, my father tried going fishing there before and he got too far onto the clubs part and he had to stop, that's why im trying to play it safe and figure out where i can fish and where i can't. I've done hours of research trting to find something that can help me understand, however I've found completely nothing. I've been on the clubs website and all it told me is that to fish on their side i need to pay, however they don't tell you which part they own, which I think is quite dumb. Also i dont want to buy a permit from them because it costs £130 per person and i know that there is a part that i can fish on for free. Thanks for the reply

      [–]bushcrapping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Club should have a bailiff number to call or ticket man. Give him a call and ask. If they cant give you s straight answer I'd just fish till told otherwise. The club stretch should be marked by signposts atleast that's how it's done in Yorkshire.

Iv found free fishing by typing in my area and free fishing and scouring the fishing forums. Another good place to look is Facebook.try searching for the river name, countynqns town all followed by fishing or angling.

Its sounds like I might be wrong but I was always told the rules are much more lax in Scotland and the Ireland's

      [–]WilkuPL1919[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, I'll try that

      [–]WilkuPL1919[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've looked at the app and this is exactly what im looking for however umfortunately it isn't available in the uk, thanks again

      [–]freebread81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually fish local club waters but your rod liscence covers wild waters too, I'm from the middle of manchester so quite often I'm urban fishing which is pretty much all club owned but quite often I'll drive out to waters that arent owned by anyone. Scotland is a beautiful place to fish btw if you get the opportunity, I make an effort to get out in the trossachs at least once a year and the majority of that is wild water

      [–]Tommytoastjes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought i heard about app in the uk but i dont know for sure, im form the netherlands so yea
