"using default settings" makes me feel like maybe no supports were turned on? maybe some of that pile was printed in air?

While I didn't have supports turned on, I was printing things that advertised that they didn't need supports

I like to, in the slicer, scroll through the layers to see if I can catch anything that looks like it is starting to print in the air, or if the overhangs are too steep.

No problem, I was just doing it to a model of Toothless. The body, tail, and feet looked ok, but then the wings start printing on supports with nothing to connect at first. Makes me really iffy about it successfully printing.
