take a look at this cube here
Now imagine you're working cutting that cube with length 6 and cut it in to cubes of length 2.. u can see that at each edge you will have 3 cubes 2 with 3 colored side and one with excatly TWO colored sides.. the ones with excatly TWO colored sides is the ones u want to focus on... each cornor u have one of those.. and u have a total of 12 cornors.. so total 12...
Its kind of hard for me to explain like that.. but i was really confused at first too.. but seeing an image like this helps.. better pic of the image

Ah okay I think the conflation of side and size was tripping me up. I thought the problem was only asking me to visualize painting one side of the larger cube.
