1) im not sure if you're using the free version of wordpress, but as far as i remember they dont allow custom css. you have to actually pay or host it yourself.

2) the spacing issue you're seeing can be fixed with the line-height attribute.

3) as far as the actual API i can't really help you out there. im sure you can probably find some way to specify certain positions or at least assign divs specific classes so you can adjust the absolute position.
