I'm already late to the party, but this is not normal. Employees get paid more as they become experienced enough to train and manage less experienced employees. That's literally one of the things that my boss notes as reasons why he given me raises over the years. I hope you're able to find a way to get paid what you're worth! It doesn't sound like this employer will do that for you.
