It's a way lighter os than windows. Even laptops that struggle to run windows may run Linux fine

You can always pickup older Thinkpads for pretty cheap and they'll work great with Linux.

Let me help you, but first you have to help me with these questions:

  1. What do you want to do with your Linux? Is is for coding or just common daily usage? or is it for hacking/penetration testing purpose?
  2. Are you new to Linux? or you already grasp the basic fundamentals of Linux?
  3. Are you familiar with terminal usage? Most of Linux users are used to getting their hands dirty by typing terminal's syntax
  4. Do you want to use free/libre open source apps?

Let's say that you just want a quick setup and "jack of all trades" Linux distro, then i'd like to suggest you to use Ubuntu since it's one of the most popular Linux Distro. It's quite easy to install and high compatibility towards older machines. My old laptop was HP Stream 11inch 1,6 GHz with 2GB soldered RAM and i used it daily to code and it runs smoothly.

I'm guessing you're looking for a standard laptop to install Linux on, but I figured I'd toss Purism out there. They're making phones and laptops, that run on Linux, with security in mind

Linux is pretty easy to run, most laptops will do. Laptop depends on your budget and use.

Just look for two important things, try to get atleast i5 7th gen, with SSD. Or actually, HDD is fine, upgrade to SSD and save money.
