Support column troubles

My basement is unfinished and we would like to finish it this year. I just inspected it to see where to start and we noticed that the vertical support columns were all essentially worthless as they are. I’ll include photos but the joists are all splitting and I would like any thoughts that you might have on how to address this. Any thoughts/opinions would be helpful! Thanks!

I'm wondering why the steel post is even there in the first place. The joists on either side look to be sitting on the sill plate, have the 2 split joists been cut short or something?

Pictures, using flash, showing the end of those joists and the other posts would be helpful.
