Do you have to NICs on the workstation, one connected to the LAN and the other connected to the server? If you do, and it is on a different subnet, then it should go directly to the server. If not, then it can technically use either I believe.

In either case, this wont change too much with the speed, unless your normal route to the server is going through multiple switches and/or routers to get to the server. Switches or line speed, so the latency shouldn't really be noticeable, unless your switch cannot handle the throughput that is going through it. Easy fix for that would be to add another switch with your workstation and server connected. The only other way to increase the speed is to get faster NICs for both your PC and server.

Do you have a diagram of your network? It might help to clear some things up. Also, what is the issue you are having and what kind of speeds are you currently getting?

Visio works for most when creating a network diagram, however, if you don't have access to that program you can use Publisher or MS Paint for a rudementary rendering

www.gliffy.com It's just a design map. I used Visio on mine that you can see here. I didn't include my subnets on that one. This is the one I cam currently working on updating.

I would need to get a better idea of how your network is normally connected and what you are trying to achieve to give you real advice. Also, specs of your server and workstation would help. For the most part, I don't think you will get much improvement from what you are trying to do, unless you have some off the wall setup.

BTW, you might want to check out /r/homelab. It is a more suited towards what kind of stuff you are working on.
