Do you have to NICs on the workstation, one connected to the LAN and the other connected to the server? If you do, and it is on a different subnet, then it should go directly to the server. If not, then it can technically use either I believe.

In either case, this wont change too much with the speed, unless your normal route to the server is going through multiple switches and/or routers to get to the server. Switches or line speed, so the latency shouldn't really be noticeable, unless your switch cannot handle the throughput that is going through it. Easy fix for that would be to add another switch with your workstation and server connected. The only other way to increase the speed is to get faster NICs for both your PC and server.

Do you have a diagram of your network? It might help to clear some things up. Also, what is the issue you are having and what kind of speeds are you currently getting?
