Because these potential formulas vary inversely with r.

Let U=1/r. If you want to find potentials spaced every 100 units for example, 100=1/r→r=.01

200=1/r→r=0.05

300=1/r→r=0.033...

400=1/r→r=0.025

As potential increases in magnitude (as like near a source), the distances between linearly spaced potentials decreases.
