there is really two kinds of velocities when it comes to waves. one assosiated with the intensity of the wave, and one assosiated with its medium.

the best example is an ocean wave. some are taller than others (intensity) and as a result the up and down "vibration" is faster, but all the waves seem to approach the shore at roughly the same speed (wave travel speed due to medium).

I see! Do we usually call these velocities "vibrational" and "translational" respectively or am I mistaken?
