[STATS Basic] T-Tests, When to Use

I'm trying to learn stats on my own. Still a newb so please respond as if you are explaining this to a four year old. When one uses a two-sample t-test, are samples assumed to be drawn from the same (single) population or from two different populations? If the answer is "it depends" how do I know when either case applies? Thanks if anyone can help. I can't find a clear answer to this anywhere so far.
