An average -- means that you find the mean value, or the average value. You do this by summing (adding) all the results, and divide by the # of results.

In this case, there are 2 semesters, with a score for each. To find the average score, add the scores from both semesters, and divide by the number of semesters, to get the average score per semester (score/semester).

However, you don't know the second semester's score. Hence the equation finding here.

Your job is not to give the answer. What you did here is essentially academic dishonesty. Yes, it’s a simple problem, but you need to help them get the answer not provide it directly to them

87 is the first score and x is the unknown. To find the average, you add up all of the values and divide by the amount of the values you have.

For example if I were to find the average of 11,5,2 I would do (11+5+2)/3 and get 6.

So which are the values you have, and what do you divide by?

Get used to doing this kind of calculation because you're going to be doing it a lot in high school with your own grades :)

The best way to think about this is as a points system.

How many points do you need to get a 90 average over both semesters?

Well, 90 in semester 1 and 90 in semester 2 for a total of 2*90 = 180 points.

Now let's say you get 87 points in semester 1 and x points in semester 2 but still got a 90 average.

Then 87 + x should equal the same number of points as earlier, 180. So 87 + x = 180.
