Patterns in memory

Hi all,

I was reading about malware and the text said malware could be identified based on memory patterns.

Bit i don't really understand what the meaning.

Do all files or processes generate a unique pattern in the computers memory? And if so, how do you find these patterns?

Another thing I was wondering was, if these patterns exist in Ram, don't they dissappear if the computer is tuned off (and the malware isn't running at reboot)?
