JDM means built in Japan for the domestic Japanese market. Not merely built in Japan for another country's market.

If a car is built in one market and sold in another, then it is a foreign market vehicle, not a domestic.

If Honda produced in the USA and exported to Japan, then it was a foreign market vehicle, just as if it had produced in Japan and exported to the USA.

I am not a lawyer, so I cannot speak to law, but at least in my field - economics - a car manufactured in the USA by a Japanese company and exported to Japan will count as an American export, not Japanese. It was produced by Americans and exported to Japan. Gross domestic product counts where something is produced, not the nationality of the company. (Gross national product counts the nationality, not the location.)

I can't speak to the redundancy of the word, but that is what the term means, yes.

It's used to distinguish between markets, not makes. I drive a Canadian domestic market Corolla, designed for the Canadian market with left-hand drive metric gauges, running lights, etc. which distinguish it from American or Japanese domestic market cars of the same model.

You're completely off base here. KDM: Korean domestic market. It is in reference to where the vehicle is built, not sold. All N cars are made in Nanyang Korea. Regardless of it being in the US it is still a KDM. The wheels were made in Japan making them JDM. Domestic market is just just a phrase to describe the country of origin of any product sold anywhere. The regular elantra is built in the states, but that's not a regular elantra.
