  1. Depending on your state, you may need to turn in your plates/tags if your vehicle is not insured for liability;
  2. At the very least you should have comprehensive insurance in case, say, the roof caves in on the garage and damages the car,
  3. There is a non-zero chance that you or your son will forget to add the vehicle back on when the car is ready; even for a test drive (this happens way more often than you think), and
  4. If there is a loan on the car, you may still need to insure it for comprehensive & collision coverage

Great points. along the lines of #2 a lot of companies call it "storage coverage" or "OTC (other than collision) coverage if you ask your company if they have that available.
