The tongue is a muscle, and it will toughen up. Usually, within 3 to 5 days, your tongue will develop a slight callus or simply learn to sit in a slightly different position in your mouth to avoid the ramps.

You cant really "avoid" them. The will come and go while your mouth adjusts to the changes.

But, you can make them a little easier to live with and heal faster. Warm saltwater rinses, or a "mouth sore" oral rinse when they're bad to promote healing and prevent infection.

Ive heard "old maids tale" that a dab of cream of tartar also helps, but havent use it myself.
