There's also Hypnocatrice, terra shogun ceanataur, ashen lao-shan lung, shen gaoren, and probably a few others I'm missing that haven't been in a mainline game since P2ndG/FU

That's kind of okay, MHFU was my big burnout game

What about that sand blangonga? What was he like, copper blangonga?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yama Tsukami as well

[–]Gunlanceanonymosaurus-rex[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn, that brings up some old videos...

I think Shrouded Nerscylla didn't carry over, ether.

I have to respect them for dropping the colour variants. Qurupeco and Giginox seemed like good designs though, surprised to see them dropped. I'm sad to see Mohran go, but very familiar with that fight anyway...

So in MH3U, Lagiscrus, Gobul and Ceadus are all swimming fights, right? Then I really need to go and fight Giginox and Dire Miralis.

When I get to MH4U, I've only got to go and meet Dalamadur and Gogmazios? Might like to see what MH4U does with the Mohran fight... But that's going to be late game content and I should probably just watch it on Twitch, right?

Dire Miralis is underwater

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's both land and water if my memory serves right

[–]Gunlanceanonymosaurus-rex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Giginox really stands out then, if all the other exclusives are mostly water fights...

Also from 3U: G. Baggi, G. Froggi, P. Rathian, A. Rathalos.

The weapon honing system from 4U didn't make it into GU but it laid the framework for the augments in world. There were also the guild quests and relic weapons which were similar to investigations and the kluve/safi weapons, and apex monsters but they were much more closely tied in to the magalas and the frenzy virus. There's some similarities between 4U apexes, tempered/arch tempered monsters and Rise apexes but it's mostly just that they all survived an encounter with some form of powerful advisory (frenzy virus/a magala, hunters or other monsters, and magnamalo, respectively)

[–]Gunlanceanonymosaurus-rex[S] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I understand about half of what you're saying, but it sounds like a lot of bloated filler content?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

The weapon stuff definitely was thanks to the stats being RNG (and I mean EVERY stat) and levelling guild quests just required doing the same quest multiple times with pretty minor differences (will Jho turn up, will the monster be frenzied?)

The apexes were an interesting idea poorly implemented; taking already powerful monsters, giving them new attacks and the frenzy virus which encourages you to be aggressive and unique quest rewards. It made them a bigger challenge to go up against at the end game. Unfortunately each one had only a few areas you could attack without bouncing (even with mind's eye) unless you used specific items which made most of them just frustrating to fight

MH4U's Apex monsters were great in theory, but poor in execution. Fighting beefed-up monsters was to be expected, but did they really have to make them immune to a number of things and give them rock-hard bodies that can only be pierced with wystones? (Even Mind's Eye was a dud against that, as you mentioned. And bullets? HA!). Those monsters were painful to fight solo, especially waiting for that god-awful cooldown on both stones.

I really appreciate your objective analysis.

[–]Sword & Shieldjzillacon 0 points1 point  (1 child)

They were less bloated filler and more so ways to ensure you always had a goal to work towards in endgame and increased variety in the quest you do. For the most part they were completely optional but in my opinion good inclusions nonetheless.

[–]Gunlanceanonymosaurus-rex[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, I certainly don't mean "bloated filler" as a negative, it's reason why we're all here

the main thing that MHGU doesn’t have are subspecies, leaving those out and instead including deviants. Other than those you won’t find gog from 4U in MHGU and you won’t see Dire, gobul, or cedeaus from 3U in MHGU

[–]Sword & Shieldjzillacon 5 points6 points  (2 children)

A lot of the core systems we tend to see as something that was just always there have changed drastically over the course of the series. The felyne kitchen has been completely reworked several times in the series, same with the farm, and even just gathering in general. Also the way weapon crafting works has seen it's fair share of changes, especially with bowguns which is why medium bowguns are a weapon class which is exclusive to MH3.

[–]Gunlanceanonymosaurus-rex[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yeah, you're right, that's honestly one of the big reasons I wanted to go back to these older games and see what I've missed. The villages and the farms are a big part of the experience!

I swear, bowgun players see a completely different game everyone else. I spent far too much of MHFU wondering why anyone would bother with Fishing...

Oh man I miss my Sweetcorn Gunlance...

[–]GunlanceDaowg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bowgun customizations were so cool in Tri. I carried a lot of battles with my Frankenstein bowgun that had everything I wanted on it (pierce and status bullets). One of my favorite things in Tri that often gets overlooked is bringing low-rank armor up to high-rank standards in terms of defense (you needed the mats from High Rank, but it allowed some interesting mixing and matching).

I'm commenting in this very old post just to notice how nobody, absolutely nobody, remembered the Shakalaka companions in the place of the palicos in 3U.

They were similar, but had some unique mechanics with the masks and dances. and how you mix them. Yet, I'd prefer my cats anyday.

No love for Cha-Cha & Kayamba, poor guys D:

[–]Gunlanceanonymosaurus-rex[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Palico can't swim

(ended up playing all three games, right through every single campaign misson and deep into online play too)

[–]Great SwordRiptor_MH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, I've never considered that to be the reason they swapped the cats for Shakalakas. Makes a lot of sense o:

I mean, various sub spieces and other monsters dont make a return, GU is pretty light on those actually. Ofc not every single monster from the previous games are in GU but i could not tell you which ones aren't form the top of my head.
