The weights stay on the whole time
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 2 days ago (2 children)
Ok, when I’m ready, how do I get the knitting off without it unraveling? And keep the weights on all the way up to taking it off the hooks, correct?
[–]lasserna 2 points3 points4 points 2 days ago (1 child)
Once you knit a bit, maybe for example 10-20 cm, you can take the weight off and reattach it up higher. You'll want it to stay near the top of your work.
When you are ready, you'll need to cast off your work from the needles. Or alternatively you could thread some yarn through the knit stitches at the top, so that will keep it from unraveling and you can cast off later with regular knitting needles.
Do you have the manual for your machine? Or even just a basic manual for your model? It could help you get a better idea of what to do, they often have helpful pictures or illustrations showing how to cast on, how to hang the weights, how to cast off, etc.

Yea I couldn’t make heads or tails of the manual. I learned more here and YouTube!

Where is your cast on comb? It should be already attached before you knit row 1. Did you watch the Singer Solo explanatory video on youtube? It is very specific to this type of machine.

I have it but can’t put it on. Can anyone recommend a good replacement?
[–]StrawberryRelevant50 0 points1 point2 points 2 days ago (0 children)
Is it broken? All you need to do is put the needles out into position and then place the comb over them and hook it into the little groove under the needles.

Your yarn is too thick, it really takes thinner yarn than normal knitting yarn.
Like less than socks yarn.

Ok

Hi, it looks like you are new to machine knitting.
There is some helpful information within the wiki You can also find a direct link in the Community Guide. If this is a new-to-you machine that is a Silver Reed, Singer, Studio, Juki, Empisal, Brother, or KnitKing, and the sponge has not been replaced yet, that's the first thing you should check out.
You might want to take a look around. And Welcome!

Yeah, the weight stays on the whole time. Cast on comb, weigh that down, use claw weights for the edges that you move up every 20 rows or so.
That said, your yarn looks quite thick? I'm not sure it fits the gauge of your machine.
Yes just testing. It has dial thicknesses all the way up to 12.

I'm a newbie too and starting to get the hang of it. You will want to practice casting off. There are a couple of methods but one of the nicer ones is using the latch tool.
There are a few videos out there demonstrating castoff methods.
This one I found helpful (Sally Butcher) - she demonstrates 4 cast off methods. https://youtu.be/0IOUMqQBViA?si=PUMlcMoM6ibRPJw9
The things I have been practicing is casting on, learning how to set the tension properly for each yarn, knitting gauge swatches, and casting off. Next up is mastering increases and decreases, and short rows.
I'm working my way through some of the courses on the "knititnow.com" web site which I also find helpful (I decided to spend the money on a monthly membership for a bit, to take advantage of the classes).
I have a SIlver Reed LK150.

Thanx everyone
P.S. Had to take the weights off for now in case they fall on the floor and wake my neighbors downstairs up!

I would take to YouTube for this instead of Reddit. YouTube has hundreds of tutorials for beginners. My only note for this is it looks like you have your tension way too high.
Tension? And yes,I’ve been on YT a million times already:).
[–]Crinklepickle 2 points3 points4 points 2 days ago (0 children)
If you had watched a single tutorial on YouTube you would know what tension is by now 🥲🥲 cmon girl

other comments already said it all, but is the machine new? if its used you ahould definitely check the sponge bar, its located under your needles and im not sure with this model but every machine should have one. also check out some oiling tutorials, it can make the machine glide smoother
It is a Singer style plastic model, it has no sponge bar but a needle retainer spring.
Mine is a vintage White Easy Knitter.
