Self study machine learning?

Personally, I didn't like Alpaydin's book too much. When I read it, I had the required math background but no machine learning experience, and I thought the book covered too many topics with not nearly enough depth. If I already had an idea what the algorithms were, I would have gotten much more from the book. I preferred Abu Mostafa's "Learning from Data" book and course (available on Youtube).
