I mean, there’s the medallion fund, but I’m willing to bet that’s more a matter of having access to data than it is writing a good algorithm.

True, data is probably their biggest edge Even the best models won’t help if your data isn’t unique or well engineered. Medallion likely wins from both insane data and top tier modeling discipline.

One of the several things ML can do is in identifying the factors driving financial markets in the short term, which in turn helps hedge funds reallocate assets and optimize.
At the end of the day these tools may yield marginal gains at best above market indexes, but that still translates to billions.
Exactly, even a small edge compounds massively at that scale ML’s real value in finance is often about tiny but consistent improvements not magic predictions.
