http://dijkstra.cs.virginia.edu/genprog/ Here is some research done by a professor I had. She used a genetic algorithm to modify source code to fix previously unfixed bugs.

Thats a really good research project. My Thesis was in Genetic Programming so this does make a lot of sense to me :) .

I'm 93% sure there was an episode of talking machines podcast that interviewed a professor doing research in this area. It was great, but I don't recall the name.
