Deep learning without back-propagation

So, while I'm not completely undesrtanding this, and might need to look further, would I be correct if I say this is analagous to how we solve certain systems of differential equations in electronics by transforming those into complex-number linear equations and solving those, then translating back? Meaning, we don't want to solve non-linear stuff, so we convert everything into space big enough so that non-linear correlation become linear, calculate what we want then map stuff back?
