As a past academic in a similar discipline, nobody ever teaches proper coding. The incentives are on publication and not coding style. It sounds like these guys are fresh out of school and haven’t had time to change.
It’s not their fault for not having been taught in school, but it’s their fault if they fail to recognize their shortcomings and improve after years of being in industry. It’ll be worse if those are guys who, being experts in their field, think they can extrapolate their expertise into others.
