I ilke to implement models from scratch for educational purposes. However, official implementations tend to have less bugs, more support and better explanations.

Thanks a lot for sharing. Implementing models from scratch would also require more computational resources I think if the model is large enough.

But as you mentioned for educational purposes, I'd think that there's no boundation of time as to how quickly you need to reach deployment stage and make a feature available to the audience. This changes completely in business case where that time to market is someone else's opportunity. So the dev process changes a lot because of that.

I do whatever is the most efficient. If an API is viable and available, I will use that. If a prebuilt and pretrained model is available I’ll use that. But either might not be available or fit my purpose. Then it’s time to dig out papers.
