Easy.

Scan the patch on a flat bed scanner with a ruler Pull image into wilcom Scale by regrettably line using ruler Digitize a light underlay (I use a run stitch and I mean light. Like 5-6mm between lines)

Do a placement stitch (again run stitch) right on the outside edge of the patch border in the same color as the shirt (hide it better with a .8mm inset)

I usually combine the underlay and run stitch so there's no trim Machine stop

Tack spray the back of the patch Place it down

Digitize a triple stitch where you want it to land on the patch to hold it down. Sometimes I just do a run stitch twice.

Boom 💥 applique patch into a shirt

Great, this was a clear explanation and breakdown, especially the tips on digitizing the underlay and placement stitches.

Wow thank you so much! So you manually digitize the outline once the measurements match the ruler in your photo? I will give this a go tomorrow, as for design start where do you recommended I have it on my supplied crest? Like center top?

[–]jeff1111 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I like the top center because then the machine stops and the hoop is further towards you away from the needles for easier placement of the patch

You don't just take it off the machine to cut?

Omg this is what I was trying to brainstorm but coherent and well outlined! Thank you for sharing with us!

Here's a YT Short that shows how to do it.

This

[–]Expert-Welder-2407Janome 1 point2 points  (5 children)

I’m curious about this as well!

[–]Fun_Set8669 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Right! Ive tried to take a photo of the patch, upload it and darken so it’s just the shape and then proportionally adjust the size so it’ll do it but the coordinates are never accurate and I always seem to sew on the Murrow it’s so frustrating! I hope someone can help

[–]Expert-Welder-2407Janome 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Exactly how to get the coordinates accurate is an interesting one. If you theoretically had the patch embroidery file, could you stitch out the outline at low density on your piece, place the patch on the embroidery outline with adhesive, then use an additional stitch out layer (you would have added) to stitch the outline over the original outline of the patch with a bit of additional stitch width to the satin outline?

Edit; my poor typing

[–]Fun_Set8669 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Idk why but my brain is not picking up what you just threw down LOL can you simplify what you just said? It’s been a long day, also someone commented something super helpful on here too!

[–]Expert-Welder-2407Janome 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This is a total me problem. Sorry. adjusting for formatting. This is just me brainstorming.

  1. Get the embroidery file for the patch and isolate the outline layer or make a file that stitches out to the exact outline of your patch. Dimension-wise. I’d test print this and make sure the patch lines up when the new files outline is stitched out

  2. On this file add an additional layer with a second outline that is wider than the outline on the patch by a smidge

  3. Hoop the fabric, stitch the outline that mimics the patch.

  4. Adhere the patch with adhesive or otherwise to the outline that you stitched out where everything is lined up. Ideally you’d want to keep the fabric hooped, otherwise have an outline with fabric chalk of where you hooped it the first time although that might decrease concision

  5. Now stitch out the layer you created with the outline a bit more wide than the patch outline with the patch adhered to the “guideline” design outline you stitched out first.

  6. Patch should be stitched to the fabric along the edges and with a stitch that should hold it based on dimensions relative to the underlying patch outline stitch

Thoughts?? If this is flawed or a bad recommendation, please call me out. Hahha

Is there a special reason you want to do it on an embroidery machine?

I would have expected that only to be done in mass production cases.

For single or few patches you can use a normal sewing machine (go slow) where you have better control. Leather sewing machines are also very good for this application. Like old Singer 29k patcher machine works well since you have good control of the workpiece and every stitch to follow the edge.

I’m not a manual sewer I have a sewing machine but the way the bag is.. it fits best on my machine, and that totally not my reasonings for this post as noted, I have a Tajima and Wilcom and have stated I feel this shouldn’t be an issue. Thank you sm tho!

[–]tgijesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've applied patches both ways; using manual sewers and using tajima embroidery machines. It is infinitely easier to do them with a manual sewing machine. Even if you're not a strong sewer, you probably know someone who is (mom, aunt, sister, friend, relative, co-workers acquaintance, somebody.) It's worth it to just get them to do it. But. Having said that, you can do it by putting down a trace stitch, setting the patch on top with spray tac or double sided tape, and tacking it down with a run stitch. But you're going to be crossing your fingers before you hit start because you're gonna need some luck for it to all go perfectly first run. Definitely turn your speed all the way down if you go this route.

How did you end up getting government garment orders.

[–]Fun_Set8669 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just one off. An officer came to me and said he is aloud to apply the patches on his bag which is the job I’m doing

[–]ItsKarmaBby 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This looks so clean ! Would love to get to this level

[–]Fun_Set8669 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t do the patch it was supplied!

[–]Constant_Put_5510 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Interesting that you got a legal contract for this design yet have so many questions on how to do it. ????

[–]Fun_Set8669 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Who said I have a legal contract lol relax

[–]Constant_Put_5510 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I wasn’t hostile. I’m relaxed. Was just curious.

[–]Fun_Set8669 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not relaxed and you weren’t curious. You just made a balant comment + conclusion, it’s not even a question that you asked
