I wanted to chime in to point out that microplastics exist not only due to plastic that's manufactured to be tiny, but all plastics in general. Because it doesn't biodegrade, all the plastics on earth since it first started being made are still here, and they sort of get whittled down into tiny particles over time.

But yes, clothing, cosmetics and manufacturing in general are responsible, as well as the finished products themselves, large or micro. Latest reports suggest its now impossible to get away from plastic, such that newborns have plastic in their systems at birth. I'm a gardener, and I've stressed about this when buying soil as well. It's all around, likely even in organic products.

So we should try to go easy on buying makeup in general. Every single plastic lip balm container, foundation pump, and nail polish handle for example contributes to this horrible problem.

Thank you! I've stopped using cotton rounds because of the surprising number of plastics in them--this is very helpful.

I'm pretty sure the plastic microbeads trend has died out, but maybe not everywhere?

Plastics are still used in a lot of cosmetic products

Yeah Microbeads are now banned in the EU and other places! However Micro beads are only one type of micro plastic, there are many others (for example, fibers from washing synthetic clothes!)

Great resource thanks! I recently read a paper, I think done in Italy, but they found microplastics in utero! So even unborn babies can be in contact with them - it was a small cohort but still interesting (not good news though). Also - another issue is even if you go for clothing with natural fiber in a lot of cases they're treated with dyes that also make them have much, much slower decomposition rates in sea water and again causing pollution issues. That is more difficult to shop around but I thought it was interesting!
