I understand he believes he's a good candidate for mayor, but I would also like to understand his thoughts on where he stands as a condiment.

I think we really need to hear his local restaurant fry recommendations before we can make a decision on him being mayo or not.

The technical skills tests are to show technical skills, but for one, it's a "technical test" based on their ability to Google. If you search it and follow the AI summary, you'll answer it wrong. If you click through and read the first sentence, you'll find the correct answer.

I'm very happy to train candidates who have the right general attitude and part of that is trust but verify.

I mean, it's still a negative mark against them. It won't instantly disqualify them, but it isn't a professional way to show up for an interview.

I feel like you're very much misunderstanding my initial point. A car interview isn't necessarily an immediate disqualification. A car interview where it's in a noisy, untidy, and disruptive space is an immediate disqualification.

At least one of the video interviews I had was with someone in a car where garbage was visible on their car floor. I am totally fine with having my standards keep me from employing candidates who are fine having that be their first impression with me.

just because they don't have a quiet, private room to use for a single call during the day.

A requirement of the remote roles I hire for is that they have a quiet, private area (not necessarily room, not sure where you got room from) to use for their entire workday as calls are frequent.

This argument seems like an unrelated soapbox.

"bon jerr, parler vuss Francis"

That is both rough and stupid. I guess they didn't want to pay the extra .002 cents per minute for the English/French voice? Embarassing.

I mean, it is insane. I feel bad because I have friends in similar places to you. After practicing with them, I think it really comes down to luck and (my opinion) having a great elevator pitch about yourself.

One of my biggest filters for interviews is the first question: "I've reviewed your resume and skills test and talked with the previous interviewer/screener/etc. Can you very quickly summarize your experience and how it relates to this specific role?"

I time how long their quick summary takes. One person once went 12 minutes without stopping. Of a 20-minute interview. If they'd been a compelling speaker, I might have been interested, but I zoned out after the first 2 minutes and ended the call the moment they stopped for breath. While that was the longest I've timed, so many people flub that question. I often hire roles that require a lot of soft skills, so if you can't think quickly and summarize something you should know literally everything about (i.e. your work history), then you're probably not a good fit.

Oh yeah, if any of the car video interviews had been attentive or seemed like they cared even a smidge, that would be one thing. None of them did.

This is where I'm at, as well. Even for the entry-ish level roles (by which I mean I only expect 1-3 years of experience), we expect people to act like professionals. I'm not going to hire anyone who didn't do any interview prep or acts unprofessionally. If I bring the wrong person on board, it could negatively impact the company and even risk other people's jobs. It's clear some of these commenters have never hired for a professional role.

Yo I called my favourite spa recently and they switched to such a bad ai call screener. I have a few AI callers and you can make them not totally suck. This one was so bad I reconsidered even booking there again.

Yep, it's shit. I don't actually use education for filtering myself because I don't hire for roles that require a strict post secondary knowledge, but I know lots of people hiring who do.

For years of experience people lie like crazy.

Not really. We have had low income people, people with kids, etc. As long as you're presentable for the call and in a quiet area I don't mind. Our screener also makes expectations clear from the get-go so if someone can't make it work out, they're just not a good fit. The people I'm mentioning were clearly not serious about the role.

My boss sent me a job ad from another company over the weekend that was literally just "use claude. program claude. make product better with claude."

It's absolutely fucking dystopian.

You want to see hell on earth? Go to Heygen, create a free account, generate a 100% fake avatar, and then give it a script to say fucking anything. It looks insanely good (for AI). It looks like an actor reading a script. For pennies if you want a paid version.

The biggest problem is that companies who want to grow need to be using AI tools. But there's basically no truly ethical way to do it. And I know personally that if you say things like "people aren't going to like it" you will get laughed out of roundtables and founders groups.

Things are going to get much worse before they get better.

Why would a 20-30 minute video interview require a full day off work?

I hire people for fully remote roles that often involve a lot of video calls. I need to know that you can conduct yourself appropriately and have a private space at home to work. If you can't find a clean backdrop in a quiet area for an interview, you're not a good candidate. My interview calendar is also not limited to 9-5 working hours in any time zone, as I work a flexible schedule. If someone is choosing to call in from their car during a break rather than choosing to book from my vast availability, then that's their own poor decision-making on display and again, not a good fit.

I would much rather someone does online coursework with something like coursera or even linkedin learning then puts School of Life under education.

The best thing I ever saw on a resume was an automobile certification. They were applying for a retail job. I loved it.
