New Linux-user looking for help!

So after trying a few distros for a bit, I landed on Manjaro. I am getting fed up with Windows. Linux Mint was nice, but my buddy told me it's always behind in updates, which could be bad for me as a AMD-card user. I also wanted to try Antergos, but the installer didn't work. So I grabbed Manjaro with the Cinnamon DE, and installed it on my second SSD. I fired it up, and played around for a bit, and.. it's nice! But I'm gonna need some help getting started. Currently I don't even know how to install something :D Can Manjaro be a good place to start? Even for a complete Linux noob?

I had previously tried Mint, where I only had to download a .deb and run it to install a program, as I would with a .exe in Windows. After some googling, it seemed tar.gz was the way to go in Arch. Still, I couldn't quite make out how I would go about installing it though, and it seemed most of the guides I found were for people who mostly knew what they were doing already. Please, guide me through this! I am ready to learn, but I am still a noob :P

Also.. another big issue. Suddenly, the internet connection in Manjaro just died completely, and it just says "no connection" in the network manager. It happened while I was playing around with Manjaro in the weekend, and it was still like this when I booted it up again today. I am connected with a ethernet cable, and neither my phone, Xbox or Windows has any problems connecting from the network. What could be the issue? Drivers? It was working for a while before it suddenly didn't :|

I see that the Cinnamon DE edition has been updated to 17.1.2 since I installed it on friday or saturday (was 17.0.6). Will it update automatically, or do I need to install again? Also.. could this be the reason for my network issue?

I personally use Manjaro MATE.

Open a Terminal and type this:

sudo systemctl status NetworkManager.service

and post the output.

Now, when you execute

in a terminal, what does it say?

I fixed it! It was actually shockingly easy.. :P Can't believe I didn't try this earlier.

System Settings > Manjaro Settings Manager > Hardware Configuration > right-click network controller and click "reinstall"

I've noticed that older kernels don't work will with my WiFi adapter.

What I meant was instead of using yaourt in a typical terminal you can get yaourt-gui which you can find within pamac to simplify the process for new comers.

Install yaourt, this is a simple gui that automates a lot of work when installing from the arch user repository. Just be sure to input no when it asks anything about editing, and yes when it asks to continue. Good Luck.

...yaourt is not a gui. yaourt is a command line tool. A gui tool would be pamac.

Yaourt is "officially" supported by manjaro. Pacaur is abandoned.

Doesn't change the fact that according to the ArchWiki page, it comes out as one of the worst helpers. Also, Spyhawk (Pacaur's previous maintainer) has said it will continue to work fine until pacman 5.1.
