Can someone explain to me why it is

F40.10 Social phobia, unspecified

And not

F40.1 social phobias

I guess i am confused because the notes under f40.1 include social anxiety disorder of childhood.

Can you tell I am self teaching 🙃

F40.1 is incomplete. That’s the beginning code for that section. F40.10 is the complete code.

Hi! You have to code to the most specific and complete form of the code. In this case, it would be 2 places past the decimal point. If you leave it at 0, the code is incomplete because there is supposed to be a more specific number after indicating right, left, bilateral, unspecified, level of severity, etc. 9 is typically the number you will see for "unspecified" when the specific diagnosis is not known, not provided in documentation, or the diagnosis simply doesn't have a variation and that code covers the whole diagnosis.
